CBNA
Blackspace
Black Students’ Association
Blackspace is an organization at McMaster University dedicated to creating opportunities for black women to connect, collaborate, and empower one another. In addition, Blackspace aims to improve the lives of women locally and globally by raising awareness about issues that women of colour face.
To my colleagues and me, Blackspace is not merely an extracurricular club. It is an opportunity to create avenues for black women and showcase the brilliance and diversity that we can bring not only to professional fields but also to creative and holistic fields. Blackspace aims to create spaces for black women in all types of fields by offering guest speakers, workshops, and panels that cover various topics to help us achieve our goals.
We host general meetings at the beginning of each semester and organize destressing events throughout the year. We look forward to having you join us. For more information on our events, you can visit our Instagram @blackspace.mcmaster.
CBNA aims to create a community where Black nursing students feel seen and connected, as well as empowered by providing them with the tools needed to excel in their academics and professional careers.
Annual events: CBNA Annual Mixer - Our first event of the school year (typically held in September/October)! To create an opportunity for Black nursing students to connect with others in the program, build friendships, and learn more about the club. New Grad Live - Three Black new grad nurses from various nursing specialties are invited to speak at the event and provide students with their experience and information regarding their specialty, as well as transitioning into the profession. Self-Care Night - A night to relax with fellow Black nursing students, participate in self-care, and prevent nursing school burnout! Black History Month event - A fun and informative event that aims to empower Black nursing students to be leaders in the community by shining a light on the contributions of Black individuals to the healthcare field.
Some events we have planned for this upcoming year are: New Year New Treats event - Welcoming students back on campus in the new year by indulging in some baked delights! Drop-In Study Sessions - Providing nursing students an inviting space to study in with the comfort of music and refreshments.
Additional benefits: Ask CBNA: A forum created for BIPOC nursing students to ask for advice or share their experiences, excitement, and/or fears pertaining to the nursing program or profession; and Black Nurses and Students Allied for Success Mentorship Program: Serves to inspire nursing students cross into a world of excellence, opportunity, and empowerment supported by Black nurses.
